The Big Ten to become the Big Twelve???

  • Featured Story: DeCourcy's latest blog talks about the possibility of the Big Eleven (Big 10) adding a 12th team. The fire was started by a comment made by Big 10 commissioner to a fish-wrap. DeCourcy thinks the creation of the Big Ten Network (which goes live on August 30, 2007) will be a major factor in facilitating expansion. So now the TV business is dictating conference (re)alignment? Even more shocking perhaps (at least to me) is the list of schools DeCourcy thinks could join the Big Ten: Texas, Tennessee, Kentucky, Missouri, and Notre Dame (again?). He even considers (but quickly dismisses) the possibility of three Big East teams... DeCourcy has been a guy not afraid to give us a reality check, so I would think he is not bs-ing around. But still it is surprising to me... The original story that started it all... On the TV front, the creation of the BTN network will drastically decrease ESPN Full Court subscriptions in Big 10 cities and states as Big 10 games will not be shown on ESPN's Full Court pay per view package. [updated since the original post].

But that was warranted for the first two years: He took over a program that went 0-16 in the Big 12 the year before, and had a culture of not-winning.

Random Thoughts on 2007-2008: ex-Dookies and the Arizona Wildcats

  • Former-Dookie vs Former-Dookie: Two former Dookies will be facing off each on the other coast next season. I am talking about undersized power forward Jamal Boykin at Cal and big man Eric Boetang at Arizona State. I applaud both players for making the right decision and escaping Coach Dracuka K's Cameron Den. Boetang could only take one year of K and used the ACC connection to escape to the west coast where former NC State head coach took over Arizona State. And Boetang, a McDonalds All-American selection, has a good chance to be the starting center of a Pac-10 team. Much better than warming the bench at the Dookestra. Jamal Boykin was more patient, he stayed for 1.5 semesters, so he won't be eligible until the Spring semester. He should also do well at Cal, regardless whether he starts or not. He was also a top 100 player coming out of high school, the biggest knock on him was his size for a college power forward. But will either one get any post-season play (other than the Pac-10 tournament)? Cal has a better chance, although Arizona State is bringing in a lot of talent. I can see at least one NIT bid out of those two teams. But it's better to play in the NIT than warm up the bench in the NCAA? Isn't it?

  • Arizona: The team came close to putting more banners at McKale in the 00s. First almost another national championship in 2001, then almost two more Final Four appearances if it wasn't for Ole Roy's Kansas team in 2003 and the epic meltdown against Illinois in 2005. Unrealized expectations might describe some of the Arizona teams of the last few years. Lots of talent, lots of potential, but something was missing.

What was that something missing? Perhaps an enforcer on the coaching staff? "Roz" was Lute's deputy and friend for many many many years, but the team needed to shake things up. Clearly he didn't want to lose the two young and promising assistants (Miles Simon and Josh Pastner), so a new deputy was in order. (Although Pastner did flirt with the possibility of joining another well connected in Texas coach, Billy Gillispie at Kentucky, more on that later). And with that comes something that could go either way for the Wildcats: Kevin O'Neill, the enforcer is back. O'Neill is known among insiders, (and they are not shy about saying it in public) that he has an absravise type of personality. He is not the type you sent as a peace envoy to help negotiate a cease-fire. The idea of course is that he could inject toughness and intensity to the team, and emphasize defense. It was no secret that the teams of the last few years were having defensive lapses. The patented Arizona runs on offense (often sparked by their defense) became rarer and their defensive breakdowns increased (eg at Virginia at the grand opening of the John Paul Jones arena).

Part of the reason may have been the recruiting of the "Moody Blues". A number of players from the last few years were more "moody" than the average player. The list is long: Shakur, Chris Rodgers, Hassan Adams, Kirk Waters, Salim Stoudamire.

Part of the reason last year however may point to the Silver Fox himself. And you can't blame him too much, but he is the Silver Fox. He should have known better. He fell in love with the "Princeton on Ice" style of play, five versatile players that could pass, shoot and score. They played like Princeton but on fast-forward. They had some exciting games, playing basketball the way it should be played. But that had side-effects: He shortened his line-up to a point where those five were playing almost all of the minutes. This I believe wore them down both mentally and physically and took the rest of the players out of the rotation, both mentally and physically. By the time Lute tried to adjust, it was too late...

So what happens in 2007-2008? The Moody Blues were supposed to be gone, but Kirk Walters got an extra year of eligibility. Marcus Williams went to the NBA based on potential but he wasn't physically ready for it. Shakur and Radenovic exhausted their eligibility and they are gone. So what does the line-up look like? That question will depend on the philosophy that defines this season. If Kevin O'Neill has his way, it will be defense first. This could bode well playing-time wise for Daniel Dillon, Bret Brielmaier and physically strong Fendi Onobun. So who is the new point guard? There's Nic Wise who got little PT last year, there's Daniel Dillon who was a defensive sub last year, and there's incoming scoring freshman Jerryd Bayless. There's also Brandon Jennings but that's for 2008-2009. On the wings there's Jawann McClelland and Chase Budinger along with freshman Jamelle Horne who will get PT since he is only the 3rd wing in the rotation. Upfront you got Jordan Hill and everyone else. If Jordan Hill can play the "4", this will allow more PT for the other centers: the returning Kirk Waters, rebounding Mohammed Tangara and incoming SoCal Alex Jacobsen. Also vying for playing time will be Brielmaier, Fendi Onobun and freshman Zane Johnson.

But perhaps what happens at the 2nd big man position will be determined by the point guard. Why? Anyone, even a defensive minded coach like O'Neill can't possibly not start McClelland and Budinger. If Dillon becomes the starting point guard, you need a 3rd scorer, so you probably have to pick the best offensive big man to play along Jordan Hill. Unless Jordan Hill becomes the 3rd scorer of course. However if Bayless becomes the point guard, this give them the luxury of having a defense-first big man. Brielmaier could become a poor man's Ivan Radenovic on offense (passing wise). Tangara could have an impact on the boards and with blocking, assuming he is ready to go health-wise (I don't know what's his status). However, what could make things interesting and return them to the glory days of the feared Arizona runs of the past is this Kevin O'Neill influenced line-up: Bayless and Dillon on the backcourt, either McClelland or Budinger on the wing, and Jordan Hill along with another defensive-minded big man. Bayless allows them to play Dillon at the same time because he can score. This establishes that defense is first and foremost, defense matters. Etc, etc. Then the first substitution brings in Budinger or McClelland for an instant offensive spark. This of course goes against conventional wisdom but perhaps that's what's needed to shake things up at Arizona. The more conventional approach would be to start the two scorers on the wing, Jordan Hill of course, and Kirk Walters, being a 10 year senior. If defense really really matters in this scenario, this would allow Dillon to start at the point.

So what will the Kevin O'Neill era bring to Arizona? One could perhaps point at Pastner's interview at Kentucky as one of the first ripples created by his arrival.

ps1> I hope this doesn't offend Arizona fans too much :)
    ps2> I consider proof-reading a luxury :)

  • Farewell Skip Prosser

Sad news today, Wake Forest men's basketball coach Skip Prosser apparently died today from a heart attack :( Skip Prosser was a positive and upbeat guy, he had success at Wake Forest despite being in the shadow of North Carolina, Duke and NC State, where he recruited Chris Paul among many other quality players, on and off the court. Just a few days ago Wake signed two highly touted 2008 players, so things were looking pretty good for Skip. Unfortunately life is unpredictable, we are all day to day...

More on this at Fox Sports, A Sea of blue, CBS Sportsline, DeCourcy, ACC BasketBlog, CSTV, Rivals, scout.com . Doug Gottleib talked about Skip Prosser on ESPN News just a few minutes ago. A biography of Skip at CSTV's Wake Forest site. Skip's basketball camp website.

AASAA (and it's not a bad word)

  • The coaching carousel may spin again according to Goodman. Ricky Stokes may be out at East Carolina was the talk in Vegas. Very popular in Vegas, apart from the buffet and the entertainment was the Vance Walberg offense.
  • The laying of the hands by Calipari has turned this offense into a sensation. And those two coaches have put together a clinic at the adidas Midsouth Coaches Clinic, Sept 14-16. Since Calipari loves the cameras so much, how about a DVD and a book on the offense? So when they tell you to AASAA, they are not swearing at you :) AASAA means attack, attack, skip, attack, attack, which is the mantra of this offense. Check your tape libraries or CSTV for a number of Memphis Tigers games. It may take Walberg another year or two to really showcase it at Pepperdine as he has to recruit the right players for this system.
  • Can't wait for the new season to start? Get started by reading the 30 previews posted so far at CHN. The good people at CHN post daily previews of their Top 144 teams each year. A nice feature!
  • John Clay's blog informs us that the reports that Alvin Brooks is the new assistant coach at Kentucky has been premature. No decision has been made yet.
  • CAA Hoops sings Duran Duran songs!
  • Lots of recruiting updates at Recruiting Wars including Kentucky, Lance Stepheson, Tyreke Evans, Ole Miss, Leonard Washington and more!
  • An excellent letter by a reader was posted at Truth about Duke.

  • And now a word from our sponsonrs, 2007 NCAA College Basketball Tournament games on DVD!

  • Book Rivalry: Wes Miller vs Dane Bradshaw

If Dane Bradshaw of Tennessee can write a book, so can Wes Miller of North Carolina! We have our first book rivarly of the pre-season. And they have something in common: They were both coached by North Carolina guys: Buzz Peterson, Matt Doherty and Roy Williams.

Wes Miller's book Road to Blue Heaven: An Insider's Diary of North Carolina's 2007 Basketball Season. The book is 256 pages long, by Pegasus books, currently available for pre-order at $16.32, with a September estimate for release. Amazon does have a pre-order price-guarantee so you can get the lowest price when it ships. The book is edited by Adam Lucas, a Chapel Hill resident who wrote four UNC hoops books.

Dane Bradshaw 's book is titled "Vertical Leap: Inside the rise of Tennessee basketball", with a foreword by Bruce Pearl. The start of Bruce Pearl era at Tennessee is now on paper for all to read. Bradshaw's book is shipping right now, it is 218 pages, and currently costs $13.57. Amazon does not have a picture of his book yet - that's why I did not post a picture below. If I can get one from the publishers, then I will add it! I'm saying this so that people don't think that I am picking on Dane Bradshaw! I don't want to get Bruce Pearl upset :) Update: Thanks to Tennessee Valley Publishing for the picture of the book.

State Farm USA Basketball Challenge tonight in Las Vegas (aka All Star Game)

College hoops is still months away, but tonight, Sunday July 22, 2007, you can enjoy the State Farm USA Basketball Challenge in Las Vegas. The senior Team USA men's basketball team will be divided into two and the two teams will face off in front of the Las Vegas crowd. The game will also air on cable TV on Fox Sports Net (FSN) and NBA-TV. The game will also repeat on later tonight on Fox College Sports and also on FSN at a later time. Official website.

Check with your local listings for airtimes, as FSN schedules vary from region to region depending on what else is happening in that particular region. The game itself will be played at 4pm pacific / 7pm eastern. The game will also be shown on NBATV at 7pm (I think) titled USA Men's Senior Blue vs. White Scrimmage

I am not sure which players will dress tonight, but a number of all stars are part of the Team USA roster. Not sure who will coach the two teams, but everyone's favorite coach, Coach K is the head coach of the team.

Dollars and Sense: Let's make loads of money!

While google'ing around for something unrelated, I ran into this February 2006 post from Tom Farrey of ESPN the Magazine discussing financial and legal matters involving former student-athletes of football and basketball, scholarship caps, profits and class action lawsuits.

And let me tell you, show these revenue to profit ratio to wall street and main street and they will go crazy. Imagine if your corporation had $18.5 million of revenue and $13.1 million of profit. That would send the stock off the roof! And that would spark about ten thousand investigations on the business practices of the company :)

Those numbers are those of the most profitable basketball program in the country in 2004-2005 according to data from the US Dept of Education. And which program is that? PitinoVille (Louisville went to the Final 4 that season). About half a million behind is the Silver Fox at Arizona (historical meltdown vs Illinois in the Elite 8), with national champions North Carolina at #3. Among the top 10 programs listed, NC State is running the tightest ship, the difference between revenue and profit is just $2.4 million. On the other side, Kentucky has the highest difference, $5.7 million difference between revenue and profit, with Louisville at $5.4m and UNC at $4.8m (I was tempted to calculate percentages but got sidetracked). Yet these numbers would still be off the charts on Wall Street.

The most profitable football program is Texas with $38.7m in profits out vs $53.2m of revenue. Michigan is running the tightest ship, with a difference of only $10.7m between profit and revenue. On the other side, the big spender is clearly Ohio State with a difference of $25 million. But once again, these numbers would be off the hook on Wall Street.

  • The NCAA Tournament post with all (but one) the 2007 NCAA Tournament DVDs has been re-organized for easier access. Now the games are broken by region, and each game is clearly identified as Elite 8, Sweet 16, 2nd Round and 1st Round. The only games missing are (ironically) the Final Four games and the opening round game. The other 60 games are available, and cost between $22-$25 per game. 2007 NCAA Tournament games on DVD. Also available is the official 2007 record book of the NCAA, and the official program of the Final Four. Shop! shop! shop! ;-)
  • Thad Matta gets a Juco guard, but I bet he's not as good as Mike Conley. More recruiting stuff at Recruiting Wars
  • One more problem for Dave Odom says Jeff Goodman. Yet another one of his recruits was not admitted to the university. Goodman also critiques the 2008 class. He doesn't go as far as Mike De Courcy did, but he does call Greg Monroe "Josh McRoberts with a better attitude". Ouch! Goodman also picks his top player in the class.
  • A Sea of Blue comments on a Florida story on Tubby Smith wiht plenty of quotes from the man himself, Tubby Smith
  • Rucker will be rocking according to Dick Hoops Weiss. The Boost Mobile Elite 24 camp will feature some of the top players of the 2008 class, and beyond, including Lance Stephenson and freshman LaQuinton Ross.
  • In case you missed it, MSNBC's Beyond the Arc has a story on Kevin Love being the Gatorade player of the year. Could also be the Hatorade player of the year in the 2007-2008 Pac-10 ;-)
  • The George Mason upset over UConn is still alive!
  • Mike DeCourcy makes a strong case for showing the FIBA Under 19 basketball games on TV. The games are available online via FIBA. The Play the Right Way blog is also following the U19 games.

    Title intentionally left blank

  • A side-effect of the increase of the 3-point distance? Rotnei Clarke, a player Gary Parrish calls "little white shooter" has been climbing up the charts in the class of 2008. He already committed to Oral Roberts, but an ... oral commitment is not binding (sorry, but I can't resist silly puns). Rotnei says he is going to let G*d make the choice for him...
  • No Spin Zone writer Mike De Courcy discusses Roy Williams and recruiting
  • The 144 previews of CHN continue with Yale, Valpo and Sam Houston State
  • In the Return of the Big Blue Part II: Body and Bones, A Sea of Blue examines the 2006 recruiting class, which I call a foundation type class. You don't have the super star but they are all solid players. Especially Derrick Jasper has only scratched the surface so far. If you are participating in fantasy sports stock markets, buy Jasper stock and thank me later :)
  • 30 resumes received by Ball State according to Dick Hoops Weiss including three former head coaches and an Indiana shooter.
  • A player by player analysis of the Pan Am roster by Goodman! Duke-slayer Eric Maynor of VCU was the biggest surprise. More on the Duke slayer at CAA Hoops Also Wojo of Rivals via Yahoo Sports breaks down some of the PanAm players
  • Goodman informs us that the U19 is rolling, rolling, rolling, offers an inside look at Fairfield (props for extended mid-major coverage) and also the Morris twins won't reopen their recruiting after looking the Tiger in the eye. As discussed before, they will spend a year in prep school before joining the team/college in 2008-2009. And they keep getting taller. As you my recall the core of Calipari's team comes from a legendary Laurinburg Prep team.
  • Also linked by Goodman, this friendly-looking gentleman was running high school basketball tournaments.
  • On the positive side of things, Hoops Coach talks about the winning edge. Also on the positive side of things, a number of good news in sports.
  • But there are more troubles: Maryland space-eater Lonny Baxter was shipping guns through FedEx (oh my!), while Iowa State guard Mike Taylor has been kicked off the team
  • The Rivals on Yahoo Sports discusses who should take the big shot. Mentioned are Chris Lofton and Drew Neitzel

    Mid-week Repor(t)

  • Goodman's blog reports that Dave Odom got lucky this time, incomign freshman Mike Holmes qualified (remember Chad Gray?), and fiery Bruce Pearl gets extended thru 2013 with a total compensation package of $1.3 million per year. To put it in perspective a lot of people may never earn that much their whole life in income, before taxes/FICA/etc
  • Ole Roy gets a big man, after going 0 out of 3. More on this at Recruiting Wars. Also there a link to a story by Skwara on the coaches being split on early recruiting of 14 year olds and such.
  • Speaking of Roy Williams, he announced today that he is dealing with vertigo. Vertigo, the real thing, not vertigo from the success and high profile of the North Carolina job. I kid you not!
  • Gary Parrish has a reader's appreciation mailbag day
  • Dick Hoops Weiss says DeMarcus Nelson will be out six weeks with a broken hand. He also has updates on the upcoming Empire State games. Hoops also reports that grouchy giant Jeff Rouland, the 2-28 head coach of Iona last year, will get an NBDL gig

  • Coach K smug cloud causes iPhone malfunction at Duke

The statically charged smug cloud surrounding Coach K and Cameron Indoor Stadium is causing interference with iPhones on the campus of Duke University. It is believed that the iPhones wireless modules are affected by certain particles found in abundance in the Coach K smug cloud. Scientists have identified these particles: whiningnonstopiton, obviousrefereebiastron, nc2afavoritismium, vitaleon, AMEXygen, espnionium, dirtyratonium, bilassium, and bigotron. Environmental groups estimate at least 50 years of residual pollution caused by the aforementioned particles.

Random Thoughts on the 2007-2008 (Marqutte, UNC)

  • Think Trio. Not "Da Da Da", but the trio of Felton, McCants and Sean May. A very touted incoming freshman trio, it took them three years to maximize their talents and win a national championship. So which trio could have a big breakout this year? A similar trio, but not exactly. This trio has a point guard and two wings, instead of a point guard, a wing and a big man. And who are they? Why the Marquette trio of Dominic James, Jerell McNeal and Wesley Matthews. I'm not saying they are going to win the natinoal championship, but they have a very good chance of having a season to remember (Big East title, Elite 8 or Final Four even)
  • The AOL Sports Fan House bloggers have voted North Carolina as the #1 team of 2007-2008. The March Madness All Season blog thinks likewise. At first thought this may sound a bit far fetched. After all they just lost a unique player to the NBA lottery (Brandan Wright), they lost a veteran senior (Rayshawn Terry) and a special situations player, a long distance bomber who actually plays defense (Wes Miller). So how can they be a #1 candidate afer that? Part of the reason is because we (global we) typically pay too much attention on who is gone from a team, but what really matters is who is actually going to be playing next year... Ole Roy has no incoming recruits in 2007-2008. But that doesn't mean he doesn't have a new player. Redshirt fresham William Graves will be added to the rotation. A name not many may be familiar with, but he is a top 100 forward from the deep class of 2006. Only at Carolina such a player would take a redshirt. He will be in the rotation next year... So what else do they have to warrant a #1 spot? A great point guard in Tywon Lawson, a premium shooter in Wayne Ellington, an energizer bunny in Tyler Hansbro, two big men from SoCal that will make their impact felt with increased playing time in Deon Neon Thompson and under-rated Alex Stepheson... Is that all? Nope, there's more. And these two are probably the most crucial ones: Defensive stopper Marcus Ginyard (remember Jackie Manuel?), and versatiler scorer/shooter Danny Green... Two more guards, likely off the bench, in versatile Bobby Frasor and speedy rather one-dimensional Q Thomas... The 11th man (no, we are not talking about soccer) will probably be local forward Michael Copeland... So that gives Ole Roy a staring lineup of Lawson, Ellington, Ginyard, Thompson and Hansbrough. Two point guards on the bench in Q Thomas and Frasor (also a two guard), a versatile wing in Danny Green, and two forwards in Stepheson and Graves. These five could be the starting lineup of an NIT team or a top 8 ACC team! Remember Lawson and Ellington were considered by a number of people the top players in their position in the deep class of 2006... So one could certainly make a case for them being the #1 team of 2007-2008. I haven't looked at all the other teams yet, so I can't really say where I would rank them. The problem with pre-season rankings is that no one is that good compared to last season, so it's hard to crown teams as #1. Pre-season rankings should start at #20 instead :-)

  • PanAm roster is finalized, Pearl starts a fire, and more

  • Midnight Madness is Friday October 12, 2007
  • Pan American Games update!: ESPN/ESPN2 will show a few hours of Pan American games, with basketball on Saturday July 28 (I'm assuming the final game?). However, ESPN Deportes (spanish-speaking version of ESPN) is having many hours of daily broadcasts from right now (Tuesday July 17, 2007) through Sunday July 29, 2007. ESPN Deportes is usually available on digital cable as part of the Spanish-language cable packages. Ironically and strangely Comcast does not include this channel in the Digital Sports Tier. I thought that's why people pay an additional $5 per month, to get all the sports channels. If you are a Comcast subscriber call them and ask them to add all the sports channels to the Sports Tier or give us a partial refund :-)
  • Goodman announces the final roster of the USA PanAm team. The 12-man roster includes one player from a mid-major conference, three from the Pacific Northwest, and one 2008 NBA Draft lottery pick.
  • A Sea of Blue has lots of content from the SEC hoops coaches teleconference. Apparently fiery Bruce Pearl took exception to Billy Gillespie's commit-athon since he took over Kentucky. Pearl's wife added fuel to the fire with socio-political/geopolitical generalizations/stereotypicalizations (I am making up words as I type, after all language is a living thing!). And for SciFi fans: There is a Dune reference in their story!

  • Another tiger breaks free (I had to work a Pink Floyd reference somewhere), Kalen Grimes is off the Mizzoura Tigers squad. The Snyder era continues to haunt new coach Mike Anderson. If you are looking for a silver lining, Grimes is more of a space-eater and was not a good fit for the 40 Minutes of He** style of play.
  • Did you miss Gregg Doyell? He just wrote this!
  • Gary Parrish had his fill of peaches at the Peach Jam in Georgia. This is his report. Chris Fouch was the hero of the games, while his AAU coach is rumored to be heading to Xavier, right after AAU summer play ends. Parrish also bets an autographed picture of Ashley Judd (???), has a story on Kenny Payne, infighting among the NY Gauchos, and a short profile on 2009 up-and-comer DeShonte Riley, a 6'9" center recruited by Izzo, Matta, Amaker (ooops Beilein), Huggins (ooops Martin) and JT III.

    Monday Night Hoops

  • Strange??? The three teams Vanderbilt faced in the 2007 NCAA tournament were: Georgetown, George Washington and Washington State. Can you see the pattern?

    Everybody loves Duke
  • Clay also has a very good write-up on the whining of Coach K. I agree 100% with his conclusion: "Coach K whines too much!".
  • A Sea of Blue discusses the Dookie "why they hate us" essay.
  • The Dookie "why they hate us" essay is posted at the Duke Basketball Repor(t).
  • Among other things (read: everything) the Dookies blame is a couple of posts at the Nation of Islam Sports blog: this and that
  • And I'm not the only one who notices how Coach Dracula K drains the life force out of his players and turns them into K-Zombies. The NOIS blog says "He stole the talent and energy...".
  • And no mention of Duke is complete, without a reference to the Truth about Duke encyclopedia.
  • Please note that the above issues deal with men's basketball at Duke under Coach Dirty Rat Dracula K, not the whole university. But the occasional spillover effect is unavoidable especially if someething or someone was touched by Coach Midas K.

  • Jim Valvano's ESPY speech can be found at the AOL Sports Fanhouse. The speech is on YouTube.

  • Another loaded post at Goodman's blog: Updates from the U19 team which will make Kansas State fans very happy. Lots of details on various players, both of interest to college and future NBA draft fans... Also: dates of various preseason exempt tourneys, the tough Gauchos guards take on all, Mr Jersey gets a space-eater big man, and more... The OldBEEPe Classic is the Old Spice Classic. Also sopBLEEPres. are sophomores. The FoxSports website is apparently editing parts of words that would be offensive if they were stand-alone words. You can do the math and figure them out, I'm not going to post them here :)
  • More from Goodman: The PanAm roster is down to 14. And it looks like ESPN2 might carry some of the basketball games. Some of the 14 players of interest: Duke-slayer Eric Maynor, Joey "I'm gonna own Oden" Dorsey, Roy Hibbert, and smooth operator Wayne Ellington.

    Weekend update

  • Featured Story: DeCourcy says Duke will remain an exclusive club, despite the transfers of Jamal Boykin (good job in ejecting before it was too late) and Eric Boetang and Josh Mecha-Roberts (NBA 2nd rounder with 2-year contract). Coach Krapola wants his precious Puke program to remain an exclusive club. He doesn't want to bring in a dozen kids for visits. Just five is fine for him. • From the Archives: What is a K-Zombie?

This was posted in April 2006 but I still think it is still very relevant today. Here is the text:

    What is a K-Zombie?

A K-Zombie is a basketball player at Duke whose life energy is drained by Coach K, thus becoming a K-Zombie. Just look into the Duke's players eyes and you will see the effects of this - they have become K-Zombies! A recent example: Sean Dockery. Some of them are able retain some of their life energy, others are not. The clever ones transfer or bolt for the NBA before it's too late :-)

    Ole Roy ain't that good?

In the "what have you done for me lately" world of sports, Ole Roy is in trouble. Part of it maybe a spillover from the meltdown against Georgetown in the Elite 8, part of it is because he signed no one in 2007, and part of it is because he hasn't signed many and lost a handful of high profile verbals for 2008. So, the sky is falling... Or is it?

I'm sure Ole Roy knew that at least one of his prized freshmen would have bolted out. I mean, you didn't need to be a rocket scientist or Marty Blake to figure out that Branda Wright was a top 10 lottery pick. He also had one scholarship to give from graduating senior (Rayshawn Terry). Wes Miller was not on a scholarship in 2006-2007. But in typical Ole Roy fashion, he earmarked just a few players and that was it. Kevin Love went to UCLA (good personality match with Ben Howland, Kevin Love actually enjoys playing in slugfests). So that was it for 2007 for Ole Roy. He's done this at Kansas as well, and that frustrated Jayhawks fans even when they were madly in love with Ole Roy.

Bob Gibbons is quoted in the story below saying: "Blue heaven is a bit cloudy in recruiting". Superscout Dave Telep says "it creates a sense of urgency". Let's not forget the last time Ole Roy had an atypical roster talent-wise he did one of the best coaching jobs of his career.

So what happened? Has the Georgetown meltdown exposed Ole Roy to potential recruits? Or is this just cyclical stuff, accenuated (I was told to use this word, I don't know what it means or how to spell it) by Ole Roy's practice of only selecting a handful of players to recruit and that's it?

I think it's more the latter than the former, but reasonable minds can differ. But I'm not the one drunk or high ;-)

Al-Farouq Aminu decides on Wake Forest!

A big surprise perhaps, but a much needed boost for Wake Forest and Skip Prosser. He not only gets Aminu, but he also gets fellow Georgina center Tony Woods. More at Recruiting Wars

  • Brian Zoubek fo the Dookies has foot surgery
  • Ball State AD said coach Thompson not going anywhere. One of these national writers should write a "Tale of Two Brothers" spotlighting the last couple of seasons of JT3 and Ronnie. Probably won't make Big John happy with such a story though.
  • Andy Katz returns to Insider-blogging . The free part of the story talks about Mark Gottfried's proposal to create two 10-day recruiting breaks, where coaches won't be allowed to recruit, and be forced to *Gasp* do something else. What does the for-pay part of the story say? I have no clue.

    Life in the D-League

The NBDL (aka NBA's D-League) is having its pre-draft camp in Arlington, Texas, July 28 to 29, 2007. The actual NBDL draft usually takes place during the first week of November, but I haven't seen a date for this year.

Monday Night Hoops (Mid-Major Writers Edition)

  • Mid-majors of the world unite and take over! CAA author trades books with MAC author. What am I talking about? Michael Litos wrote a book on George Mason and the CAA, Cinderella: Inside the Rise of Mid Major College Basketball, focusing on the year George Mason made their dream run to the Final Four. Meanwhile, Ray Mernagh wrote "1 Chance 2 Dance:A Season Inside Mid-Major Hoops In Mid-America" (currently not listed at Amazon), focusing on a season of Mid-American Conference (MAC) basketball.
  • Speaking of George Mason they lose assistant coach Scott Cherry to Darrin Horn and Western Kentucky

  • Meanwhile Van(ce) Coleman at CSTV publishes the top 42 recruiting classes of 2007. Some familiar places and some new coaches making a splash in his list. Three big ten teams in the top 10, so maybe they'll play more offense and less slugfest :-) The next John Beilein (Jerry Weinwright) is in the top 10. Highly recommended!

More updates from Goodman: LeBron makes more than an appearance at his own event, Nigel Munson transferring out of Va Tech, Tubby Smith and Billy Clyde Gillispie sitting next to each other, and Josh Mecha-Roberts got a two-year contract by the Portland NotJailblazers-AnyMore. Check his blog for all the details.

  • This does not look good for Cal, tiny Jerome Randle and wing Patrick Christopher attempted to scare people using a shiny silver cellphone? Maybe the fumes from all the "smoking of herbs" in Berkeley got to them ;-) This does not look good though.
